Hello, we are Verónica and Marco, and we want to share our experience on the 7-day Tour of Armenia that we took with Amistad Tours. It was an extraordinary adventure through the history, culture, and landscapes of this surprising country. If you’re looking for a guide to Armenia, here we share our best moments to inspire you for your next adventure.
Day 1: Arriving in Yerevan
From the moment we stepped into Yerevan, Armenia’s capital, something about the atmosphere embraced us. The warmth of the Armenian people captivated us instantly. We were welcomed with smiles, a toast of local wine, and, as if that wasn’t enough, the majestic views of Mount Ararat in the distance. It was impossible not to feel at home. That very night, as we strolled through the vibrant Republic Square, we were amazed by the light and music show at the central fountain. Everything felt magical, as if Armenia was welcoming us with open arms.
Day 2: Echmiadzin and Zvartnots
Our journey began by exploring the most emblematic corners of Armenia’s Christian history, a country that surprised me when I learned it was the first to adopt Christianity as its official religion. From the very first moment, we were immersed in history and spirituality. Upon arriving at the Cathedral of Echmiadzin, the oldest in the world, I felt a wave of emotion that’s hard to describe. Later, we visited the Temple of Zvartnots, and what struck me most was the contrast between the ancient ruins and the imposing mountain landscape stretching out behind them. As if that wasn’t enough, we were fortunate to witness a religious ceremony at Echmiadzin. That moment added an extra layer of magic to the visit, making it an experience I will always remember.
Day 3: Geghard and Garni
This day was undoubtedly one of the most special moments of the entire tour through Armenia. From the very moment we set foot in the Monastery of Geghard, carved directly into the rock, it felt like stepping into a fairytale. The atmosphere was magical, and when our guide explained that one of the sacred spears, which according to tradition pierced Christ on the cross, is kept there, the place took on even more significance. After that, we visited the Temple of Garni, the last remaining pagan temple in Armenia. The architectural beauty of the site, surrounded by an awe-inspiring natural landscape, left me speechless. It was one of those moments when you realize just how small your existence is in the face of so much history and beauty.
Day 4: Lake Sevan
Lake Sevan is a must-see in Armenia, and it did not disappoint. We spent the day along the shores of this vast mountain lake, which felt like a miniature sea due to its immense size.
The visit to Sevanavank Monastery, perched on a peninsula with breathtaking views, was magical. But the most special moment came when we tried making lavash, traditional Armenian bread, with a local family. Even though our culinary skills weren’t the best, we couldn’t stop laughing. It was an authentic experience, full of heartwarming memories!
Day 5: Khor Virap and Mount Ararat
We arrived at the Khor Virap Monastery, located right on the border with Turkey, offering unforgettable views of Mount Ararat. The guide explained that this place holds great symbolic value because, according to tradition, it is where Noah’s Ark landed after the flood. The majesty of Mount Ararat is hard to describe in words. Additionally, we had the opportunity to release a dove into the air, which has become a symbolic tradition of making wishes at this site.
Day 6: Tatev and the Cable Car
The second-to-last day is perfect for adrenaline lovers. We visited Tatev, one of the most impressive monasteries in Armenia, which we reached by riding the longest cable car in the world. The view from above was like something out of a movie! The journey over the deep gorges of the Armenian mountains was as thrilling as the visit to the monastery itself, a place full of mysticism and legends.
Day 7: Yerevan, Shopping, and Farewell
We spent our last day exploring more of Yerevan, visiting the Vernissage Market, where we bought handmade souvenirs and enjoyed the local craftsmanship. We also had time to visit the famous Armenian brandy factory, where we tasted some of the most delicious drinks the country has to offer.
To top it all off, we had dinner at a traditional restaurant, where we tried dishes like Dolma and Harissa, bidding farewell to Armenia with the promise to return.
